Dental Crowns Salt Lake Family Dentistry Dentist in Salt Lake

IF YOU HAVE A BROKEN OR CRACKED TOOTH OR A LARGE CAVITY, YOU MAY NEED A DENTAL CROWN.

When you don't practice good oral hygiene, plaque will build up and eventually harden and create bacteria that burn small holes in your enamel, which is how a cavity forms. When cavities are not removed and then treated with a filling, your teeth can become weak and deteriorate. If we do not treat a cavity right away, it can decay, and a filling will no longer solve the problem. This is when we use a dental crown. Dental Crowns are one of the best ways to restore your teeth if they have become excessively decayed. At Salt Lake Family Dental and Cosmetics in Murray, Utah, we offer dental crowns to all qualifying patients. Come into our office today for a dental crown!

What is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a prosthetic tooth that acts as a shell. The tooth completely covers your original tooth underneath the crown and allows you to have free reign of your mouth again. You can once again eat and speak normally. The purpose of a crown is to restore cracked and damaged teeth, correct cavities, and get rid of tooth decay. A crown is custom-made to match your exact tooth structure, so no one will even know that you have a dental crown in your mouth. Crowns are a simple solution to big problems.

Two Types of Crowns

We offer two dental crowns, each depending on the patient's situation. The two types are partial and complete crowns. A partial crown only covers the flat surface of your tooth. Partial crowns are a similar appliance to a sealant. A partial crown is a good option if the amount of decay is small or your tooth is not entirely broken. A full crown is a complete prosthetic tooth covering. It completely covers the tooth underneath, giving it time to heal while the crown does all the work. Our dentist will help determine whether you need a partial or a full crown.

What are Dental Crowns Made Of?

Dental crowns come in many different materials. During a consultation with our doctor, you will discuss the other materials and the pricing of each. We will be completely transparent about how each crown can benefit you. Porcelain is the most popular material because it looks like your natural tooth, but it is more expensive. Other crown options such as gold and ceramic are more noticeable but less expensive. People often choose gold or ceramic for back molar crowns because no one will see them.

Dental Crown Procedure

The dental crown procedure begins with digital x-rays and impressions of your teeth. These are both done to help create the most precise crown. Whether you have a partial or a full crown will determine how much the original tooth needs shaving. We shave the original tooth down to eliminate decay and ensure the crown can fit over the tooth. While we create your crown, we will give you a temporary crown.

Once your crown is ready to go, we will have you in for another appointment. We will clean your teeth and thoroughly dry them so no moisture or bacteria is trapped underneath the crown. We use dental cement to place the crown into your mouth. This may cause slight sensitivity, but you can use your crown immediately. We encourage good oral hygiene and proper care of a crown, even though it is a prosthetic tooth.
